Students Explored Green Infrastructure and Natural Processes in the Vistula River Valley

As part of the project, an educational field trip was organized to provide students with practical insight into sustainable development solutions and the functioning of urban ecosystems. The first part of the programme included visits to buildings featuring green roofs. Using a thermal imaging camera, participants were able to observe how green roofs reduce surface temperatures, mitigate the urban heat island effect, and contribute to improving the local microclimate.

The second part of the event consisted of an educational cruise on the Vistula River combined with an on-site lecture. During the session, students learned about the key natural processes occurring in the Vistula River valley, including river erosion, sediment transport, and sediment deposition. They also explored the mechanisms responsible for changes in the river channel, the formation of sandbars and river islands, and the influence of river dynamics on landscape development and river ecosystem functioning.

The field trip provided valuable practical experience by complementing theoretical knowledge with direct observation of natural processes and sustainable environmental solutions, enhancing participants’ understanding of climate adaptation and environmental protection.
